ASSIGNMENT 1 // BIG LEDs:
Research a lighting project, event, object, or sculpture that interests you. Write a short blog post describing it both technically and artistically. Try to describe it using the properties and goals of stage lighting.

INSTALLATION OVERVIEW // FLUX:
FLUX
Modern technology pushes the speed of communication between people to its limits.
Concept/code: Ksawery Kirklewski
Sound design: Arkadiusz Krupiński
Tech management: Jakub Kirklewski
Tech support: Filip Klonowski
interactive light installation, 6 meters tall, 13-meter diameter on the ground, 4 high-speed cameras, 8-speaker sound system, 4 800 meters of LEDs strips, 144 000 pixels running at 100 frames per second, with custom software and hardware
About the installation…
FLUX is an interactive LED installation that was created by a small team of programmers, technologists, and sound designers that incorporates sound, LED lights, and high speed cameras. The project page describes the installation as “a tubular shape rising to the clouds, four high-speed cameras and an eight-speaker sound system we’ve built an immersive experience which reveals hidden algorithms that shape our online encounters at the speed of light.”
Describing the installation…
GOALS:
- Selective Visibility:
The overall lighting in the room the installation is in is kept very subtle and dark so that all attention is on the LED installation in the center of the room. It also allows for the subtle glow of the LED lights to envelop the outskirts of the installation - Mood:
The overall mood is very dramatic, dynamic, engaging, and gives almost a life-like aura in the manner in which the lighting seems to draw in from the tendrils on the floor up into the ceiling. It is mesmerizing how the colors shift and lights move and creates a powerful interactive piece. In combination with the sound, it gives it both a mechanical but otherworldly feel that adds to the life of the piece and makes it feel like it has sprung out of a sci-fi film. - Composition:
The composition of the piece allows everyone to walk around and engage with the piece from all angles due to it being in the center of the room. It also allows for the installation to have a larger-than-life appearance by stretching from the tendrils outstretched along the floor all the way up into the ceiling. - Revelation of Form:
The form has an organic shape and is reminiscent of a waterfall or tree. While it is very digitally based, the way the lighting was programmed gives it a life-like appearance that feels very organic as well. By having a round shape, it also allows people to engage and view the piece from all angles around the room and creates a consistent frame that blends into itself.
PROPERTIES:
- Color:
The colors are exceptionally bright and include high contrast between the warm and cool tones in order to give the piece more of an eye-catching and dramatic effect. The way the colors are combined gives a ‘heat-map’ effect to those interacting and being captured in the piece. Because the colors used are so dramatic and bright, when the colors are a more subtle blue-white in some of the images shown it stands out that much more. - Intensity:
The lighting installation itself is fairly intense, especially due to the dark surroundings. The lights themselves however has a really nice fading effect at the edges that give the forms displayed more of a realistic look. - Form:
The lights themselves stretch out and up, allowing the whole room to be bathed in the subtle glow of the LED lights. It also allows viewers to get very close to the tendrils at the base of the piece and draws their eyes to the center and upwards in the room. - Movement:
The overall movement is pretty fast at 100 frames per second and allows for smooth movement and captures of people interacting with the piece.
