ASSIGNMENT // CREATE A SKETCH:

For the final project, we are simply asked to make something that incorporates a variety of concepts we have learned and incorporate them in a way that challenges us.

“In the course of making your final project, you are expected to push your abilities to produce something that utilizes what you have learned in the class that is useful in some manner to yourself or the world.”

I decided that being I wanted to do a play off of the ‘point and click’ and ‘flash’ games I grew up playing and specifically thought of the Barbie website and all of the fun games they used to have. 𐙚⋆°.

I went down a rabbit hole looking up old games and even finding some playable media on the Internet Archive and another site specifically dedicated to making playable versions of these old games. I decided it would be fun to go with a customizable room/dress-up game. 𐙚⋆°.

During my research, I also came across similar dress-up games made using p5.js.

On the left is ‘Dress-Up Game (Untitled)‘ by powellben2000 and on the right is ‘Dress Up Game‘ by elizamecklenburg. Both are sketches I found on p5.js that are along the same ‘dress up game’ line of thinking I have for my project.

In terms of aesthetics, I would love to also draw my pieces to create a ‘paper doll’ project but in the interest of time, I will be using images largely sourced from open-source websites like Wikimedia Commons and making edits using Photoshop. 𐙚⋆°.

When thinking of a subject to use, I thought it would be really fun to use an alien but then my imagination went a little too wild and I decided I should probably choose a subject that gives me a little less creative freedom to help narrow down the scope a bit.

In the end, I decided to go with a vintage troll doll because it will be easy to manipulate customization options and they give me playful, fun, and nostalgic vibes that complement the feeling I am trying to invoke with my flash game-adjacent project.

Here are the main things I would love to incorporate in the final version of my sketch:

• Troll Doll with customizable features
  The dolls will allow the user to select hair color, skin tone, and belly button gems. I would also like to include some accessories and clothing items as time allows.
• Backgrounds with unique sounds to go with them
  There will be a couple of backgrounds to choose from that will also include sound.
• Download button
  There will be a button that allows a visitor to the site to download and take their troll with them offline.

In the future, I think it would be fun to expand off of this theme to create a whole collection of games.
