PERSONAL REFLECTION:

I love the silly Internet world of the late 90s and early 2000s. I think that the Internet has lost a lot of the silly-ness and freeform creativity that made it such a fun place to spend time as a kid and pre-teen.

When I think back to all the flash games, silly websites, and overall Internet whimsy I truly feel like the generations after me really missed out on something special about being online. Everything is optimized for search, placed in neat little boxes, and packaged perfectly for mass appeal.

As a creative, I really want to challenge the notion of what a website can be now. I want to make things that serve no other purpose than being weird online. Especially now when being online now often just means opening the doors to privacy for the sake of data mining as a tool for large tech profit.

Here’s to those keeping the Internet weird and full of personality, the way I think it should always be.

ASSIGNMENT // CREATE A SKETCH:

Recently in class we have been exploring how to incorporate sound into our p5.js sketches. This assignment asked us to explore sound as a medium in coding.

“Make a project that sequences, synthesizes or analyzes sound.”

Truthfully, I am not really sure where my initial idea came from, maybe that the oscillator sound on p5.js is similar to an alien spaceship if you play around with it? Then I remembered a funny lamp I saw once that had a cow being abducted by an alien and thought it would be the exact type of silly, fun project I’d want to make. Here is a link to the sketch. I began by sourcing the images to craft my scene and resized the background image to fit the orientation for my sketch. I figured once those pieces were in place it would be a lot easier to figure out how to make everything interact.

Once the farm background, UFO, and cow were placed in the sketch I included a triangle with decreased opacity that would serve as the flying saucer beam. From there I adjusted the location of the cow slightly and made it so that the cow not only responded to the mouseY coordinates, but that its size decreased as it got close to the UFO.

After that, I included a ‘moo’ sound that triggers when the mouse is pressed because having it on loop got really annoying. I also created an oscillator that reacts to a user’s mouse movements to give more life to the scene. I was able to play around with a couple of different variables before I settled on making the frequency of a ‘triangle’ wave change with mouseY movements as it gave it the most ‘alien spaceship’ kind of vibe.

I also noticed that if the user took their mouse all the way to the top of the sketch, the cow continued to show up past the UFO which ruined the illusion. Rather than tinker with the code, I instead created a second layer of the background and cut out a small piece of the sky. This way, I could use this smaller second layer to seamlessly hide the cow and keep the illusion that it was disappearing into the spaceship. While this way may not have been efficient from a file size standpoint, it was a lot faster and was more familiar to me.

I tried playing around with making the cow rotate as it went up into the spaceship, but it was difficult to change the axis to the center of the cow image and I ended up creating problems with other interactions so I tabled that part for now.

Here are the things I would love to incorporate in future iterations of this sketch:

• Make the cow spin
  I would love to make the cow spin around its own center axis as it gets closer to the UFO.
• Make the UFO interactive or animated somehow
  I would love to add some simple animation to the UFO (ex. it wobbles slightly) or add an interactive element (ex. starts to glow once the cow reaches the UFO).
• Make it a game or digital sound player
  It would be fun to make a little p5.js game out of this interaction or even a musical instrument of sorts that has other interactive elements that generate sound.
